Some people criticize and even condemn fasting and prayer, claiming they are unnecessary in the new covenant. I remember hearing a gospel minister preach against fasting on the radio. He argued that the New Testament doesn’t command us to fast.
However, his words lacked power; they felt more like a lecture than a message full of conviction. Many Christian believers struggle because they neglect fasting and prayer. Do you realize that many other religious groups believe in fasting and prayer?
Even secret societies and groups with dark motives fast and pray to achieve their goals. In this article, you will understand why fasting and prayer are essential. I’ll share some of my experiences, which will help you grow in knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.
Don’t let anyone deceive you that fasting and prayer aren’t necessary. The Holy Bible commands fasting and prayer (see Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:20, Luke 5:35). By reading on, you’ll discover profound truths about fasting and prayer. Look around you and observe the corruption and challenges in the world today. In some families, no one experiences prosperity, and many struggle even to eat twice a day.
Poverty, sickness, pain, rejection, and affliction dominate many families. Often, bad dreams and strange visions reveal these struggles. Such dreams can signal curses or spiritual attacks. Unusual dreams, like wandering in public toilets or places filled with garbage, indicate issues needing attention. Dreams of past workplaces, old schools, or unsettling environments can also alert us to spiritual battles.
Notice the unnecessary hatred and accusations we face in the workplace, school, or even church. Some work tirelessly but see little reward for their efforts. These are signs that we need to fast and pray. Consider the story of the woman with the issue of blood. She tried for years to find healing, but it wasn’t until she encountered Jesus that she was delivered.
Her faith activated God’s power, resulting in her healing (see Luke 8:43-44). Some problems can only be resolved through fasting and prayer because these practices are like spiritual currency. Physical strength can’t solve spiritual issues; they require spiritual solutions.
Hebrews 11:3 reminds us that God’s Word created the world, showing us that what we see originates from the spiritual realm. Acts 23:12-13 tells us that these Jews bound themselves under a curse, refusing to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. Why did they fast? They knew the power fasting could harness. If those in the dark kingdom recognize the power of fasting and prayer, then we as believers should never underestimate it. Fasting and prayer are powerful spiritual tools. They serve as unstoppable weapons in the spiritual realm.
Isaiah 58:6 teaches us the purpose of fasting and prayer—to break the chains of wickedness, lift heavy burdens, free the oppressed, and destroy every yoke. These practices destroy the enemy’s yokes and traps, freeing us from spiritual prisons. When you face stagnation, setbacks, and setbacks in your dreams, it’s a call to fast and pray.
Enemies attempt to weaken and entrap us, but fasting and prayer empower us to resist. Jesus showed us this when He fasted for forty days and emerged full of the Holy Spirit’s power (see Luke 4:14). If you want to experience the Holy Spirit’s power, follow Christ’s example by fasting and praying. My longest fast lasted twenty-one days, but even shorter fasts yield great spiritual results.
In my life, fasting, and prayer have become routine. Through God’s grace, I fast and pray at least three days a week, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead me. Sometimes I spend extended time in a prayer camp or a secluded place, devoted to fasting and prayer.
In Matthew 4:1-4, we learn that Jesus, led by the Spirit, fasted in the wilderness for 40 days. He resisted the devil's temptation by stating, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” We eat to live, not live to eat. If we let food control us, we diminish our spiritual potential. Fasting disciplines us and helps us live in the Spirit.
As Christ Jesus instructs in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the Spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Fasting and prayer keep us spiritually alert, sharpening our spiritual senses. They help us resist the desires of the flesh and walk in the Spirit (see Galatians 5:16-17).
Through fasting and prayer, we build spiritual power, which is crucial in facing the enemy. 1 Peter 5:8-9 warns us to be vigilant because the devil constantly seeks to devour. Fasting and prayer empower us to detect and resist his traps, increasing our faith and resilience. These practices keep our spiritual fire burning and give us the strength to withstand temptation, persecution, and the challenges of the world.
When Jesus’s disciples struggled to deliver a boy from a demonic spirit, He explained that some spirits only respond to prayer and fasting (see Matthew 17:14-21). Fasting and prayer are essential tools in the believer’s life.
The early church practiced fasting and prayer as well. Acts 13:1-3 shows that the Holy Spirit spoke when the church leaders fasted, giving them clear guidance. If you seek clarity or direction, engage in fasting and prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and reveal God’s plan.
In the season of fasting and prayer, immerse yourself in the Word and prayer. Spend time in a quiet place, whether in a prayer camp or a secluded spot, dedicated to fasting and seeking God. Meditate on His promises, and let the Holy Spirit empower you.
Fasting and prayer activate the virtue of humility, open doors to divine intervention, and renew our spiritual strength (see Isaiah 40:31). Through fasting and prayers, we experience the abundant mercies of the Lord, and our spirits remain vigilant and prepared for life’s challenges.
